In dogs, eating grass seems to have a social component because others in a group will start eating grass if one dog does. Other observations are that dogs enjoy being hand-fed grass by their owner, and eating grass is particularly likely to occur when the dog is out, away from home (this is hazardous because the grass may have been sprayed with weedkiller).
Cat and dog owners should make sure they have long grass at home for their pets. Bird owners too will find that grass placed in the cage/aviary will be heavily used.
The weed Couch Grass or Twitch is also known as Dog Grass and is highly preferred by dogs over many other grasses. It has a sweet smell when cut and relatively wide, downy blades.
Pet grass can be grown in an area of the garden or in a pot.
You need to ensure the grassy area is not used as a toilet by pets (because long grass attracts this) or sprayed with weedkiller. For these reasons, and to prevent it becoming a garden weed, pet grass is often best in a container. Keep it well watered in a sunny position. Prevent seed heads forming by trimming if necessary.
